pre chinese new year barramundi (2 Feb 2008)

the first barramundi 550g was safely landed after just a few minutes casting, using 2' bakau sp paddle lure. it put up a great fight and i had a tough time landing it using my ultra light setup (5' lemax platinum 4-8lb; daiwa sweepfire e 1000 spooled with 12lb mono and 14lb berkley iron silk leader)

big pond to cast to, with minimal snags. just have to watch out for the coconut palm leaves

chiam and his friend casting away at one side of the pond

another barramundi caught, this time using 3" bakau sp paddle lure

one happy angler with his soon to be dinner

went fishing with chen today. it was a trip that has been planned weeks ahead. it was basically to stock up on some fresh barramundi for the coming chinese new year. for the chinese, fish are auspicious as they represent abundance. i had told chiam that i will be going and when i reached the pond at kpg stoh, he was alreadi there casting away. according to him, the fish were active and he had some takes on his lure but after a few jumps, the barramundis managed to throw the hook. i didn't take long to setup my tackle and after just a few cast, i managed to land a table size barramundi which i kept. not long after that, i landed another table size fella and i had reached my quota for the trip. the 2 fish tip the scale at 1.1kg and i had to pay RM13.20 for the fish. since i reached my quota, the rest of the afternoon, i just cast for fun. i landed quite a few fish. i think landed the most fish that afternoon. chiam finally managed to land a couple of fish for keeps too and chen too got 2 barramundi just as we called it a day at around 5pm. bela_oo joined us around 4pm, but by that time, the fish had become inactive as there was no action at all between the 5 of us. chiam, his friend and bela_oo continued to fish after me and chen left. i wonder how they faired?!?

an afternoon at stoh

casting at rambungan ferry ramp while waiting for the ferry to arrive

the first barramundi caught that day... in less than 3 minutes of casting, using soft plastic swimbaits. sp swimbaits out performed hardbody lures that afternoon. i attribute that to the realistic swimming action of the sp swimbait and its life like appearance

Location: Kpg Stoh, Rambungan, Lundu
Time: 2.30pm - 5.00pm
Fish: Siakap aka Barramundi
Style: Lure fishing. Soft Plastic Swimbait vs Hardbody lures
Tackle: Light Tackle
Results: Soft plastic won the day. Lost count on the number of fish. Hardbody lures 2 fish only.
Findings: Soft plastic swimbait lures did not last for long. Lost 1 and damged to 2. 1 was lost because the fish swam to some snags and my 12lb mono was cut. 2 SP the hook snapped!!!
