negative negative positive!!!

it started off as any of my typical fishing outing. by 2pm, john and myself were on our way to sg pinang. had asked noel and chen to tag along but they were busy. upon reaching sg pinang, we were told by the caretaker that the ponds have been "closed" to anglers by the towkay. this was because a fortnight ago, some uneducated uncivilised asshole angler(s) went there to fish and took their catch home without paying. this event incurred the wrath of the towkay and because of the incident, all other anglers have been barred until further notice. all i have to say to this/these morons are... knnccb!!!

john was clearly dissapointed. there were 2 other locations that we could try out. so we went to the nearest one first which was a water logged area near tondong town. adrain aka huwiee had mentioned the place to me before, that the area is a haven for bujuks. we arrived and staked out the area. it had potential. we brought down our gears and started casting. 15 minutes went by without any take on our lures... when suddenly a 2ft long bujuk launched itself out of the water. it must have been trying to attack schools of seluang that were present at the natural pond. our hopes were lifted. cast after cast were made, but still no take. i lost concentration on one of the cast and my abu d5 6600 "char bee hoon-ed" aka bird's nest-ed. the bird's nest was so bad, i had to cut off almost half of the spool. tns.

we decided to move to the last spot, our friend's wild pond. upon reaching there, we went straight to business. john was the first to reach the pond and he shouted... big fish!!! he was wearing his new polaroid glasses and with it, he can see clearly a few feet into the water. i looked at where he had pointed, and true enough... dark shadows were swimming about, but we couldn't make out what fish it was. but no matter what, we know the fish was huge! we are talking at least 2ft long. we started casting towards the middle of the pond. 15 minutes, nothing to show from us, but we can clearly see the huge shadows still swimming about. then one of the shadow made it's was near to the bank. i was on a high vantage point and i could clearly see the fish. it was a huge grass carp. i cast my lure towards it. at one point, my berkley blade dancer (bbd) was swimming side by side with the grass carp, but the grass carp didn't even bother to look at it. then i saw a rise in the middle of the pond. when the ripple subside, i saw a big haruan. it was hovering in a clearing right in the middle of the pond. i cast my bbd to the area and retrieved. must have done that a dozen time when suddenly, my line straightened and my rod bent. hook-up!!! the haruan swam for cover in the weeds. i held my rod high. with my 12lb monoline, i tugged the fish out together with a bunch of thick water weed. when it got close, i could see that it was a huge bugger. definitely more than 1kg. hauled it up, took some photos and released it. at this point, john was "geram" of the grass carp that he decided to do bottom fishing. he rigged up his bomb hooks and cast towards the middle of the pond and went back to casting with another rod. before long, the line for the bottom rig straightened. fish on. it was one of the grass carp. but due to the thick water weed obstacles between the fish and john, it was very hard to control the run of the fish. another thing was john had used a light setup 10lb rod and line. managed to take pictures of john fighting the fish, but not long after that, the line bust when the fish made a last desperate lunge for freedom. grass carp 1 - john 0. after that, the action kinda died down. i also tried bottom fishing, and i caught another haruan about 800g and before we left, i caught another 900g haruan. i might have caught another haruan, but i couldn't remember. will confirm when john sends me the pictures. we plan to be back there again soon.

it's confirmed, i only caught 3 haruans. 2 on bbd lure and 1 using float with bread as bait.

the 2 on lure weighs around 1.2kg and 900g. the one on float was the smallest... 800g.

so my points for this outing is (2.0 x 2 x 2) + (0.8 x 2 x 1) = 9.6

grand total = 57.95 + 9.60 = 67.55

Noel's Tenganu Trip (11-12 August 2007)

was suppose to join noel, john and chen for this particular deep sea trip, but had to bail out due to unapproved visa as well as financial constraint. tenganu, from what i have gathered is a sea mount/wall, where there is a sudden drop in the ocean floor. supposedly catch is almost always good if anyone were to go there, but for that trip, the catch was so so only. noel and his father-in-law however had an above average catch compared to the rest of the anglers on board ah kwang's boat that day. among his catches were... pisang, kaci (sweetlips), lengchiam (emperor snapper?!?) and kacang (baby alu).

when it comes to fishing, sometimes we get the odd and weird catches. charles shared with me some of his encounters.
1. a baby toman that took the lure, whilst reeling it in... a bigger toman bit off the tail half of the poor baby toman.
2. a deep diving lure snagged a monitor lizard (aka biawak).
3. eel fishing at the paddy field.

over the weekend... (4.08.07)

i went fishing at sg pinang again, this time with noel. before the trip, i was thinking how great it has been fishing there on my last outing. i thought to myself, "how about a place that never fails to deliver!"

boy! was i wrong. i almost went home empty handed. i tried all the trick in the books. soft plastics, lures, hybrid lures (blade dancer), fished at the most likely spots... and thankfully a 800g haruan came to save the day. i got numerous hits but only one solid hookup. the fish were definitely around with splashes every other 30 seconds, where all the baitfish would scatter for their lives, just that they were not much interested in what i had to offer.

the fish there has definitely become smarter, after all the c&r that i have practiced. nevertheless, i shall be back to try to outsmart the fish again, soon.

unexpected catch

caught during the library fishing competition, this prawn ended up as fish bait as me and my friends ran out of bait to used towards the end of the competition.

moments after i landed the unexpected but welcomed catch, another angler us managed to get one of similar size! guess we were fishing right at the top of prawn village!
