sematan 16-17 june
this time around the people going for the trip were myself, john, noel and chen. we used obiwan's boat. for the uninitiated, obiwan is hashim and zam's dad.
john and i reached the wooden jetty at sematan by 4pm sharp. chen and noel were already there since 2.30pm... but obiwan had said that we would leave the jetty even the earliest, at 4pm. however, during that time, the wind had picked up and in turn, the waves were quite high, so we had to wait another 45 minutes at the jetty before the wind subside.
the first fishing spot was very near shore, near the batu mandi. we went there to stock up on fresh sotong bait. i was the first to bring in a sotong when reeled in my bait that was meant for an angcho, a mangrovejack or kerapu. soon after, i was also the first to draw first blood... with a palm size grade B kerapu. then a few other fish were landed. the notable ones were a 1kg+ spotted ray by john and 3.2kg & 3.6kg gagok by noel and chen respectively.
the weather turn bad later during the night. there were hardly any bites even when fresh sotong were being used. only small fish were caught. among the fish caught were sea siakap, species of snapper, grade B kerapu and gopeng.
noel, john and myself turned in for the night, when the sea became too rocky for comfort, leaving chen, obiwan and the anchorman to fish. waking up the next day, we saw some more palm size fish in our icebox. the biggest was a 1kg angcho, which ended up as our lunch.
i consider this trip non-successful and i won't count any points for the small fish that i caught.
